Dr Pei San E (Sharel) is a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh, and a core member of the Institute for Bioengineering.
Her research bridges electrochemical sensing, nanomaterials, and bioengineering, with a focus on developing next-generation analytical platforms for healthcare, environmental safety, and energy innovation. Her expertise spans nano- and microscale electrochemistry, super-resolution electrochemical imaging, and the design of advanced electrochemical technologies with real-world translational potential.
Current Research Interests include:
a) Zinc-ion Batteries: Advancing zinc-based energy storage systems to improve cycle life, efficiency, and sustainability, contributing to scalable, low-cost energy solutions.
b) Wearable Sensors: Designing flexible electrochemical sensors for real-time diagnostics in health monitoring, with a focus on selectivity, miniaturisation, and on-body applications.
c) Gas Sensors for Environmental Monitoring: Creating ultra-sensitive platforms for detecting toxic gases and pollutants, enhancing early warning systems and supporting public health resilience.
d) Water Splitting for Hydrogen Generation: Investigating novel electrode architectures to accelerate green hydrogen production, aligning with net-zero goals and energy decarbonisation.
