Encarni Medina-Lopez is the Director of the Failure Modes of Engineering (FeME) Network Plus and a Senior Lecturer in Ocean Observation at the School of Engineering of the University of Edinburgh.

Her research explores the use of remote sensing to address challenges related to water, energy, and the environment. She has a particular interest in applying multi- and hyperspectral satellite imagery, in situ data, and machine learning techniques to model coastal processes. Encarni also investigates how satellite data can be leveraged to reduce the costs of marine renewable energy and to better understand its environmental impacts. Her work extends to promoting the fair and inclusive use of data on a global scale, with a focus on how satellite technologies can support climate justice and equitable transitions in developing regions. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE), and a certified commercial drone pilot.
